The Green Fairy and the Undiscovered Country

Second Life DJ Stand - The Green Fairy Caberet

Willow Leafstorm’s new music venue in Steelhead Nevermoor opened with a set of truly cathartic 80’s dance music – almost everything was a remix or a cover. And unlike some “all cover” sets, each song was… great in its own right. I heard old favorites sound new – and had completely different reactions to some of the lyrics, because I was hearing them in light of some of my most recent experiences out there in untidy, noisy, fragile RL.

I stumbled into a fun game: “Kiosk Challenge.” There was a Relay For Life kiosk in the corner of the venue, and as it was a new one, it had a $L0 balance. So I automatically “fed” it a bit, as I do now when I encounter a zero-balance kiosk inworld. A bit later on someone else “fed” it, and I upped the ante – briefly. It went like this:

[19:32] Lelani Carver: Kiosk needs moar love! I will match everything up to $L1000 tonight.
[19:32] RFL of SL 2012 Official Kiosk Large: Thank you for your donation!
[19:33] [REDACTED Steelhead Clockwork Chum]: OK!
[19:33] Lelani Carver: Challenge thrown down!
[19:33] RFL of SL 2012 Official Kiosk Large: Thank you for your donation!
[19:34] [REDACTED Steelhead Clockwork Chum]: CLOCKWORKS RULE … the mail.
[19:34] Lelani Carver: ACCEPTED
[19:34] [REDACTED Steelhead Steampunk Chum]: ▣ ▤ ▥ ѕтєᴀмρᴜɴкѕ ᴅᴏ ɪт ωɪтн ᴅєνɪςєѕ ▥ ▤ ▣
[19:34] Lelani Carver: There, I’m tapped out – that was quick!!!

Second Life may have a policy against quoting chat logs without the permission of all participants, so I have cleverly redacted two entities without stomping all over the humor of it all. I invented the game after a few donations came in after mine; it seemed like a thing that you do. My little “challenge” was accepted and disposed of within a few seconds. I actually went a bit over my self-imposed $L1000 limit, because my little clockwork chum countered my last ante-upping with the whole thousand virtua-clams, which of COURSE I matched. Shortly afterwards, the Steelhead Salmons team captain, Fuzzball Ortega, remarked in group chat (he wasn’t at the dance) at how $L2240 had been donated in less than 2 minutes.

See, that didn’t take long!

I still don’t have much time for inworld stuff – I’ve managed to make it to some events, but can’t quite settle down to refresh my products and building skills just yet. I’ll need to immerse myself in work later, but right now… I need to just be, and listen, and chat, and laugh.

Most evenings this week we’ve been commuting to the border of the Undiscovered Country to watch someone we love wait, restlessly and impatiently, to cross over. There’s very little we can do. We’re going down tomorrow, and Monday too (though surely not, if there is a merciful Deity). We give love, we give support, we try to wrestle restaurant checks out of the hands of family members when we manage to drag them away from the Borderlands Hotel for a break and a meal.

Sorry for the obscurities, that’s the most detail I’m prepared to give.

Anyway, tonight’s gathering was what was needed, although some of the old songs gave me a start because certain phrases in the lyrics jumped out at me in odd ways. Like “Wouldn’t It Be Good” by Nik Kershaw. The remix we heard tonight was uptempo, faster, and not as long. But there’s a newer live version that Nik did in Norway (with some of his original band) that’s somehow deeply satisfying.

In the original video from 1984, the song’s protagonist was some kind of lonely, sick alien in a hep-cat multimedia zoot suit, a little like Ford Prefect putting out his electronic thumb and hitching a ride with the Vogons. Funny thought, that… laugh it up, Fuzzball!

But all this time we’re keeping vigil at the Borderlands lately, my mind is constantly racing. I lost it a little tonight (or at least, the typist did). So I turned the volume up and danced it back in.

I got it bad
You don’t know how bad i got it
You got it easy
You don’t know when you got it good
It’s getting harder
Just keeping life and soul together
I’m sick of fighting
Even though i know i should
The cold is biting
Through each and every nerve and fibre
My broken spirit is frozen to the core
Don’t wanna be here no more

Wouldn’t it be good to be in your shoes
Even if it was for just one day
And wouldn’t it be good if we could wish ourselves away
Wouldn’t it be good to be on your side
The grass is always greener over there
Wouldn’t it be good if we cold live without a care

You must be joking
You don’t know a thing about it
You’ve got no problem
I’d stay right there if it were you
I got it harder
You couldn’t dream how hard it got it
Stay out of my shoes
If you know what’s good for you
The heat is stifling
Burning me up from the inside
The sweat is coming through each and every pore
Don’t wanna be here no more

Wouldn’t it be good to be in your shoes
Even if it was just for one day
And wouldn’t it be good if we could wish ourselves away
Wouldn’t it be good to be on your side
The grass is always greener over there
And wouldn’t it be good if we could live without a care

Endgame Approaches

Still have not been inworld much aside from attending the Steelhead StHelens volcano party, which was a much-needed distraction (and great music by DJ Fuzzball and much SQUEEE-Ing by the presumptive Missus Ortega).

It was a wonderful evening. Pictures are on my inworld profile feed.

It appears our dear one is in the endgame. We can only hope for comfort and peace. She is certainly not alone, and neither are we. If you can spare some Lindens, please donate generously to the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life.

Into The Unknown

Let’s face it, I’m totally blocked, creatively.

Part of that is that I suck as a builder, unless I bother to put the time in it, and I haven’t lately (“Yeah, yeah, excuses. Rezz a box.”).

Part of that is that I lack confidence in doing a good enough job at it (“get ahold of yourself! Buck up!”).

Part of it is that I’m not that creative – I’m more a “follow the recipe” person rather than a “follow through on an idea and just GET IT DONE” person.

But I do take pretty good pictures now and then, give myself credit there. Must do more of that.

This is one end of a mysterious tunnel I found last night under a body of water in Seorakasan Sea. I was on either route 9 or 10 (things got kind of confused after the Trojan Horse incident) when the road took a steep dive down to the water and into an abandoned, flooded tunnel.

It was really… really interesting – quite a long walk (by then I’d lost the H8wheel and couldn’t rezz it anywhere) and it was too low to fly. The lighting was really evocative (My Windlight setting was Barcelona, the water setting was Coral Sea at that point).

There were some mysterious builds beyond the glass walls of the tunnel, and some wildlife under the water. Even a crashed airliner! Also, some of the ground level builds were good quality (including a really nice overwater bungalow). It was a pleasant way to just “be” inworld.

I stepped into the unknown and came out the other side – this is the view of the far entrance. It was very calming and I continued on until I actually closed the loop and got back to the starting point (or close to it) in Chilbo again. Ended up by checking out a photography exhibit I found.

I’ve been mostly absent from the social whirl inworld for a while now, because RL concerns took precedence. I just got busy, we had stuff to do, the pet needed vet stuff, et cetera. The big thing, though, is a family member is ill, (actually a couple of them have various ailments, my partner and I have a few people to be concerned about at the moment).

However, this particular dear one called us last night to update us; just since last Saturday, it seems a new “stage” has been entered. Not the final one, maybe, but one less than there was last week.

“Stage.” Ugh. It’s a horrific and humbling journey, taken in stages, this one. And we’re helpless to do more than offer love and support. “We” here in my household, and in my family, and in our larger circle of friends and acquaintances. It’s a new stage – and there’s probably not more than one to go.

Yes, yeah, it’s… awful. And there’s so little that we can do about it.

Please throw a few Lindens in any Relay for Life vendor you see, or donate to any real-world RFL fundraiser you know of, because cancer is a bitch that needs to be taken down.

I’m going to toss a few more things in the RFL vendors at my shop in Steelhead St Helens, and I think Dhughan has a few doodads he can throw in as well. I’ll at least have some free time this weekend and early next week to think about throwing some sort of quickie event together.

We’re supposed to be “off” next week having fun (possibly with a trip to the Kingdom of Magic and a visit to see Her Serene Highness, Gloriana) but really, I just have this bad feeling in the pit of my non-mesh stomach. Will hope to see friends inworld soon, and spend more time finding inner calm like I did last night on the road.

Into the unknown we go, unsure what, if anything, is on the other side.

Thanks for reading, sorry for dumping. I think I’m going to go listen to some music and goof around with… a box.

Stupid Trojan Horse Encounter

…o… then the open road beckoned on Routes 9 and 10, so I rode various zombiemobiles owned by AnnMarie Oleander/Otoole/OSomething, notorious vehicle spammer/scripter. The steam roller was pretty good, actually; it mowed right through the ice cream truck (I HATE THE ICE CREAM TRUCK) and the school bus (hate that one too). But it met its match in the Trojan Horse and got knocked catty-wampus pointing in the wrong direction.

I couldn’t get it to reverse direction, so I went on with one of my own vehicles (the redoubtable Xcentricity H8wheel) for a while. Had to sneak down the side of the road when the zombie tank approached… I had wondered about these vehicles, and finally found something at a certain provokying blog that explained the distinction between Ann Otoole, helpful forum denizen, and AnnMarie Otoole, vehicle spammer. Glad I got that worked out.

I’m just glad my Oui Coupe turned up in my inventory; I tried to rezz it after falling off of the H8wheel and it never appeared.

Must go on another roadtrip soon, I just drove the loop mindlessly, or flew, while listening to music. More on the “mood” in a moment.
