Fly Height to 4096 Meters – Test Flight Feathers and Flight Assist

The change will allow avatars to fly unassisted to 4,096 meters. Any device that adds PUSH to an avatar, to overcome the old limit, will likely launch avatars on an exciting ride. I got to test my flight feather in ADITI. They are no problem. They work fine. The neat part is they are not needed below 4,096 meters.

via #SL News Update I Week 15

Seems like a good time to test my old flight feathers and the “flight assist hat” that I have up on the Marketplace and in a Relay for Life vendor. Counting the hours until Saturday, when with help I hope to get my new graphics card and computer gutz installed in a new case.

New World Studio: French news article needs translation

This article discusses some Improvements to New World Studio that are coming soon that I’d read about on Hypergrid Business, with some new preview images.

Side note: they are looking for testers.

I don’t speak French but I speak enough Spanish and Italian (and have seen quite a few subtitled French films) to get the gist. It follows similar announcements the developer, Olivier Battini, has made on NWS’ Facebook group about improvements; what interested me was the article writer recommends and links to the Dolphin Viewer, an easy and solid choice for connecting to OS or SL.

DV doesn’t have import/export capability yet as far as I could see, though I need to do a reinstall on it anyway as it’s updated weekly.

Currently only Imprudence and I think Cool Viewer have import/export, although OARs and IARs (OpenSim and Inventory Archives) can be saved via the NWS console. Most OS content creators seem to use Imprudence. It’s best to stick to clearly labeled open source content, too.

As I’m a relative latecomer to the OS mileu (French!), Second Life’s confusing statement about physics licensing worries me; it could screw Open Sim third party viewers up. More on that from Hypergrid Business here.

I wonder if Olivier is aware of Ina Centaur’s default avatars archive?

(Removed download link – LC

The main points (somebody please correct in comments):

  • Free, open source utility that permits the user to easily create and manage virtual worlds, based on Open Sim and the Second Life platform
  • Simple creation of virtual worlds and regions on your home computer
  • Download a client (example: Dolphin)
  • NWS contains the latest version of the Diva Distro, an optimized package of Open Sim that is already preconfigured, with an interface for special functions
  • Installation does not require any technical knowledge
  • Number of regions/objects limited only by the power of your computer
  • Preconfigured public access via the Hypergrid
  • Default avatar(s), default regions or full OARs
  • Command line access tab for expert users

Etc., etc., my knack for cognate words fails me at the end there, it’s something about a highly anticipated release.

That’s for sure, Olivier just updated the Facebook page with an image and notes that the graphical interface is working. It’s… 1am his time.

I’m looking forward to the release, but will have to wait until this weekend and my hardware upgrade. Le sigh.

Olivier’s work will bring NWS up to the latest Diva Distro version, (which includes non-player characters and pathfinding). Lots of old users looking forward to the new version, and perhaps many, many new users will find it easier than ever to have their own virtual worlds.

With the update there will be easier choices: megaregion versus single region, default OARs, easier terrain and archive loading, and some other features making it unnecessary to open the console for the less technical among us (ie., me).

So that’s the gist of the article; pretty much what @MariaKorolov said to expect, but in French. I’m just amused that I’m able to (mostly) understand the article.

Olivier Battini maintains a support sub-forum for New World Studio (the ‘main’ site is for his hosted New World Grid’) in French and English, as well as the bi-lingual Facebook group. Check there for updates.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Transfering Motherboard To New Case Soon

Am I nuts? Probably.

Here’s the deal: I have a surprisingly powerful Gateway SX2800-01 that I really like, except that its small case size made upgrading the lame video card really difficult. I ended up finding a low-profile, low-power card that fit, and it worked great for 2 1/2 years. For the record, it was a Galaxy GEForce GTX 9600 LP/LP, and its fan stopped spinning last week, and Iz had a sad since then. And it’s been discontinued, and I can’t figure out which low power, low profile card it was replaced with (or compares to it in size and… powerlessness). Probably the GT6520, but it’s hard to say.

After some research and agita, I’ve decided that rather than try to find a replacement card that’s just going to burn out eventually due to space and venting issues in the case, I’m going to swap the whole, literally hot mess into a new case, get a bigger power supply, and get a decent graphics card.

So next weekend, I’m going to have my friend Bobbo come to our house, bringing his expertise. My partner Rock has swapped computers out before, we’re just having Bobbo over for geekly support, lunch, and snax.

Before you start picking parts, a builder should clearly understand the machine’s intended function. General purpose systems that deal with tasks like 2D games, Internet browsing, and document creation will obviously have modest hardware requirements. In contrast, high-end 3D gaming systems require better graphics, better cooling, and a larger power supply. Special applications, like 3D model creation and home theater PC use, should also be considered. These tasks require specialized hardware.

via Best Of Tom’s Hardware: How To Build A PC : Part 1: Component Selection

My intended function is two-fold: The first is pretty much normal desktop computer tasks like blogging, reading news, Facebooking, and working with RL photos in GIMP. The second is Second Life and Open Sim – building, texturing, terraforming, and photographing pretty views, and also product photos.

Now, I’m not planning on doing this crazy thing to my SX-box:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZISNP2zx6Fc

/me shakes head. “Dude, that is just wrong, but the radioactive hazard stickers are a nice touch. However, I wish I’d been brave enough break out the Dremel and the drill.”

You can see where he lifts out the card from the top – that hole is a solid plate with accessories tray on the top of mine. The 9600 used to fit snugly up against that because of how high the motherboard sat.

Anyway, we’d already debated whether it’s possible to cut ventilation holes in the top of the case… too much could go wrong, like bits of plastic or metal getting into to the works. And I’m sure not willing to hack the top off just to fit a full-height graphics card in there like that guy did. We’re going to fit the whole shebang into a case. I’ve already got the graphics card, and will either get a case and power supply at the local TigerDirect, or from Fry’s.

For the GPU, I’m really hoping that this will work. Because, um, I already buyeded it. It wasn’t available from the TigerDirect place nearer us, and we were at Fry’s today. I’d already narrowed my choices down to this model. It seems there’s a 2G model, but I’ve found a couple of places saying the extra gig of memory (VRAM?) wouldn’t make that much of a difference unless I had multiple instances of Second Life running, plus a heavy graphics editing program or 3D modeling session going.

I went with the EVGA 560ti because the price was about as high as I’d go, it gets good buzz on Second Life and SLuniverse fora, and I literally can’t wait for the prices to drop now that the 600-series nVidia cards are out – I bet they drop in a few weeks, but that’s too long. I’ve got stuff to make for Relay for Life events with the Steelhead Salmons.

Oog, my geek is peeking.

So yeah, since I’m upgrading my machine based on this card, I’ll be really crushed if we can’t get it to fit in the bigger case. I’m told that it depends on how high or low the motherboard sits, but it’s a micro-ATX motherboard, and I’ll be getting a mid-tower with plenty of space. I’m not too worried, but of course we won’t know for certain, until we install the motherboard in the case, whether the card I picked will fit right. It’s still in the original box, and we will measure everything carefully before opening it up.

My motherboard doesn’t support dual cards, and I’m hoping to avoid flashy-blingy LED lights, yet still have extra fans. I have a couple of cases in mind; either an Antec 300 (kind of a classic for this kind of SX2800 case-swap) or a Cooler Master Elite OR quite possibly a roomy Corsair with… lights. I may change my mind and get something with more fans that’s QUIET. Tiger Direct had some breathless fanboy product videos for some of the nicer ATX cases I was considering, one of which is touted as “Silent” in its description. The video that made me laugh is the one for the “Scout” case that had red LED fan lights, but it also had nice options.

Cooler Master Storm Scout ATX Mid-Tower Black Case by ComputerTV

Sorry about the boring tech detail, this is really so that I’ll have a record of my thought process before Everything Goes Horribly Pear-shaped.

Time to put my overclocked brain to bed. Meanwhile, because of all the incessant searching for GPUs, cases, and power supplies, my Google Reader is chock full of case ads, and the blogs I read with Amazon embeds are full of graphics cards.

Gather Ye 580GTXs Where Ye May: #SecondLife #Specs

My poor vidcard is probably toast. Le sigh.

20120406-104527.jpg

Hail, good and faithful friend that served so well and unexpectedly long. Sorry we never got around to drilling vent holes in the top of the case or ye might have lived longer to render virtual rosebuds (as ye may).

I’m grabbing suggestions for good or ultimate system requirements for my next computer. The following places have helped me clarify what I’m looking for in a new computer – or at least what’s essential, and what would be nice to have.

My partner Rock may be helping me to build a computer if I can’t get something off the shelf that’s close to these specs. He said the other night we might get something without a video card, and install the best option (probably 560 or 580 GTX, quad core, i5, PCI-e 2 or 3) we can find.

Will avoid inboard Intel chips this time, fortunately my upgraded 9600 lasted for more than two years. If you don’t want a peek at my dull RL blog, don’t go here.

This seems like a good starting point, at least thinking about various levels of “bang for the buck.”

I WILL miss the Gateway – loved the great design of the front USB panel and the handy ports for every graphic card or cable interface known to woman. It will run fine for normal non-SL use once my geek helps me get it to use the inboard GPU, and I’ll be able to do essential things.

But I won’t miss the noise it made.

First off, read this forum post:

Link: Best system specs – Second Life

Upgrading the CPU from 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo to 3.0 GHz Core 2 Quad, RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB, and connection from 6 Mbps to 18 Mbps had no appreciable effect. Upgrading the graphics card from an 8800 GTX to a GTX 470 resulted in modest improvement.
Over the years I have read that SLI doesn’t help SL, and I have read first-person accounts from from people who said it helped them, so I don’t know. I wish someone would post an account of their own experience with trying it with current viewers.

If I were getting a new machine for SL and my budget was unlimited, I would go for top-of-the-line: Core i7 990X, at least 12 GB RAM (so I could put a large cache on a RAMdisc), three or four 580 GTXs, appropriate motherboard, case, and power supplies, and one SSD for OS and program files, and another for SL data files. Undoubtedly, this would be massive overkill and there would be very little bang for several thousands of bucks, but if the budget is unlimited, why not go for it?

If the budget were limited but fairly large, I would want a GTX 580 and case and motherboard that would allow me to add more in the future. I’d get a Core i7 970, 6 GB RAM, and an SSD large enough for the OS and SL program files. If I could afford to do more, I would get two 580 GTXs so I could see if two were better than one; if not, I would sell the second one on ebay. If the budget were too limited for this, I would get a GTX 580, a Core i7 960, 6 GB RAM, no SSD, and smaller case and power supply. My reason for holding out for a GTX 580 is that upgrading the graphics card is the one change that made a difference for me.

Nalates Urriah did this Community Forum survey, and then a really exhaustive blog post on the topic:

Link: How Fast is Your Viewer? – Second Life

This blog post is probably essential reading. From this pay attention to things like model numbers: probably nVidia 560 or 580 with high OpenGL, PCI-e at least 2 or 3, serious cooling and ventilation. Read the whole thing as it’s really thorough.

Link:

The Brand Winner

Amidst all the confusion the unclear winner seems to be nVidia. That is not gospel from on high, so take it with some salt. I think it is a general consensus among SL users.

The conclusion, from page 6, sums it up for me:

What is an Adequate SL Computer
A new desktop computer with a Quad Core i5 with 4 gigabytes of ram and an nVidia GTX 470 or 560 video card with a gigabyte of video ram makes for a decent unit. You can get by with way less.

A new computer with a 6 Core i7 with 8+ gigabytes of ram and an nVidia GTX 570 or 580 is about as good as it can get.

It is possible to run Second Life with much less than either of these. Several people are happy with older computers and others with i3’s. Using Firestorm I get up to 45 FPS with my Duel Core2 and 560.

Link:

Okay then. I’ve also read in various places that the 580 series GPUs should be coming down in price soon, so will have to keep that in mind.

Diva Canto Looks Towards HG 2.0 (Meanwhile, I Sank My Continents!)

While I faffed around the other day in my private virtual playground, sinking badly terraformed continents, Open Sim’s Diva Canto was thinking deeply on the future.

And yesterday my graphics card appears to have cooked itself, so no terraforming in Second Life or Open Sim for me for a while. The fan isn’t spinning, so I will have to fallback on the original crap card. This will force me to do other things, while we figure out my next computer option.

The future of Open Sim is coming, although the present looks and feels a bit like Second Life from a few years ago, with a more DIY ethic. I got online at OSGrid via laptop using Dolphin last night, just to say I could, and found people sitting around helping each other at the welcome plaza.

I want to create my own personal grid, so I can learn enough to propose Open Sim as a way to provide a secure, private meetspace and training space when my office goes virtual. So I’m keeping an eye on the latest developments in Open Sim, on the Diva Distro that many use to run OS, and New World Studio, the package bundler/installer that got me started.

Here’s Diva Canto on Hypergrid 2.0:

What this amounts to is that the Hypergrid will be able to support different policies that better reflect different levels of comfort that people have regarding opening up their worlds. Grids that deal with protected content will be able to continue to protect that content while allowing their users to visit other grids, and even collect items there, and allowing foreign users to come in and mingle — without any asset ever being exported or imported from/into their main storage. Grids that deal with kids will be able to block them from hypergriding while allowing certain privileged staff to go out and get content and knowledge from other grids. Secretive grids will be able to prevent foreign visitors while allowing their users to go out. Grids can have only one or two regions available to foreigners, while the rest is off-limits. Communities can make up small networks of worlds that allow Hypergrid exchanges only among themselves. Etc.
I hope this clarifies where we’re going with the Hypergrid!

I know that the first question that everyone will ask is: when? My guess: sometime this summer, hopefully early.

That fast? Impressive. Educators and enterprise are going to have to move fast, to get out in front of the image problem they currently have with the public where virtual worlds are concerned.

They have to counter the image of virtual worlds people have, as in “Isn’t that like Second Life? Ewww.”

Meanwhile, NWS had a developer meeting today; they’ll have an upgrade out soon with some great features and an easy way to upgrade to the current version of the Distro.

As much as I love SL people and places, the brand is tainted for business and education. I can’t even mention it as an entertainment platform in polite conversation without having to add “It’s not ALL skeevy vampire pervs, and bling-bling pixel tarts with ludicrously huge boobs.”

No… it’s just not uncommon to encounter someone with ludicrously huge sculpty boobs.

It’s hard to explain to someone who doesn’t know or care for Second Life how… unimportant that is. It’s an intrusive distraction to me, but to a non-Resident, it’s a turnoff.

I love the funny chats, the music, and the immersive wonders. Don’t love the stress and pressure I put on myself for not being as creative or skilled as I think I should be after nearly 5 years.

At least I got my Relay for Life vendor loaded with a few charity donations! My store SLurl is in my picks. I’ll limp inworld later and add more if possible. Please visit… there’s a “phone” in my desk cubby for sending messages, too.

I guess my brave new world-building was the last straw for my card; I could tell the fan wasn’t spinning right and it must have seized up after I powered off. It was doomed, anyway – the design of the case prevented air from circulating. I’m surprised it lasted this long, frankly.

Once I solve my hardware issues, which may include a brand new desktop that’s chosen with SL/OS in mind, I’ll be building my world for fun and relaxation (I found a terrific Hawaiian music stream).

The current machine, which is otherwise a fairly decent Gateway, will probably get turned into a media server. I hope to hypergrid, but don’t know if I’ll go fully public, or offer building rights to trusted friends.

Ironically, running New World Studio with the Diva Distro doesn’t require much; it’s the viewer that’s the power and graphics hog. So the desktop may yet have the Hypergrid in its future – as a server.

There’s other issues too – need to do a better job balancing my real and virtual lives. But I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next with the Hypergrid, the Diva Distro of Open Sim, and the next update of New World Studio.

My Second Life LUsR Grid via Viewer V4.1.12

The shock-horror! The breaking news via Twitter today spread quickly.

It’s horrible news for those who can’t or won’t upgrade from V1.23 based viewers; I’m lucky enough to be able to use mesh-enabled V3 versions.

I had to see for myself; there’s not a lot of content there yet but TONS of free land. So I claimed this bit.

So Far, Dhughan’s #SecondLifeMarketplace listing isn’t borked but needs update. #whatcouldpossiblygowrong

Unlike many Second Life merchants, neither Miss Lelani nor I have found problems with our Marketplace stores, listings, or images. However, both store pages need updates due to outdated SLurls and such, but the process of updating needs time, patience, and quiet.

Mine is here, Lelani’s is there, unless it’s a web-cache-thingy problem, we’re not seeing anything wrong (there have been some pretty dire failures suffered by other merchants).

Amused to see that her unscripted pet beds are apparently marked Mature Content by the Marketeplace, visible only once logged in, because apparently BED is synonymous with conjugal relations. How droll.

These commodities are in short supply owing to family gatherings various scheduled events (such as Miss Lelani’s choral yowling on several evenings and mornings this week). After a recent bad experience updating her single Magic Box, we will both proceed carefully with migrations, and especially with product edits.

It’s my opinion that our listings probably weren’t affected by the problems precisely BECAUSE we rarely updated listings or added new products… unlike more energetic or creative merchants. So while feeling compassion for fellow merchants and their woes, I should probably feel less guilt for not creating much lately.

The following technical analysis of the great Marketplace fiasco deserves to be printed out and distributed by hand to the desks of the Commerce Team Linden code monkeys, but of course that couldn’t be before Monday.
